  • IBM i PTF Guide, Volume 21, Number 23

    June 12, 2019 Doug Bidwell

Hello once again, good people of IBM i Land, and welcome to the 23rd edition of the IBM i PTF Guide for 2019. This time around, there is an update for the required PTF list to support SAP applications running on IBM i 7.3. There is also a new version of MGTools for IBM i 7.1, IBM i 7.2, and IBM i 7.3 – and we note that it has been quite a while since we have seen an update for IBM i 7.1 on this front.

Welcome back, and we are back on track after the holiday hiatus with the IBM i PTF Guide. In this edition, you will find that there is Fix Pack 6 available for the Rational Developer for i developer environment. And that’s about it because summer is here – even though the summer solstice doesn’t start until June 21, which is also when IBM i 7.4 ships and when the AS/400 turns 31 years old – it is still summer after Memorial Day here in the United States and people have other things to do.

    Which is good.

    As for …

  • Guru: 7.4 Brings New RPG Goodies

    June 3, 2019 Jon Paris

As I’m sure you know by now, IBM recently announced version 7.4 of IBM i. Along with major enhancements such as Db2 Mirror, we also got a number of new RPG features. In this tip I’ll cover those that are already available in 7.3 via PTF. The 7.4-only enhancements will be covered in a subsequent tip.

Before we get into the details of the 7.3 features, just a hint of what is to come . . . 7.4 brings the long-awaited arrival of dynamic arrays known to IBM as varying dimension arrays. No more do you have to compromise between …

You come to the IBM i PTF Guide to find out what’s new, and I am here to tell you. First of all, there is a new PTF Group for backup and recovery, which is perhaps not very exciting but is nonetheless one of the most critical aspects of the IBM i system. We also find that the HTTP Server in IBM i 7.2 and IBM i 7.3 has security vulnerabilities.

The relevant PTFs for the Web server fixes are:

    • 3 SI69900 & SI69828
    • 2 SI69901

For further details check this link.

Also, there is a new PTF Group …

It has been a busy week out there in the PTF generation factory at IBM, with a new cume for IBM i 7.2 (following a week after the new cume for IBM i 7.3) as well as a new HIPER Group and a new Web Query Group for all three current releases (that’s IBM i 7.1, 7.2, and 7.3).

In this week’s issue, there are a few new or updated links in the Guide, as follows:

    • LDAP — IBM Directory Server for IBM i (LDAP)
    • SMTP — Configuring SSL Between IBM i and Remote Mail Router WITHOUT Authentication

So, here’s the deal: There is a new IBM i 7.3 Cume! 19116! C9116730! Have fun with the latest cumulative release on the newest shipping variant of IBM i, all rolled up and ready to rock. Also, SAP on i PTF links have been added to each release and, by the way, I installed Technology Refresh 6 for IBM i 7.3 earlier this week at a customer site and there were no issues, which is a good thing indeed. There is also a new DB2 Group for IBM i 7.3.

Be sure to check out the SAP on i Blog, …

  • Retranslation Could Boost Performance

May 13, 2019 Timothy Prickett Morgan

There are so many kinds of genius embedded into the IBM midrange line that it is hard to know where to begin when discussing all of these interconnected ideas and layers. But perhaps the simplest way to encapsulate them all is that the System/38 and AS/400 minicomputers and their follow-ons sought to abstract away and mask some of the more complex aspects of a modern system so that programmers could focus on business logic and system administrators could focus at a much higher level, too.

One of the key differentiators of these IBM midrange platforms, and one of the hallmarks …

In this iteration of the IBM i PTF Guide, you will find that there is a new set of PTF patches for the TCP/IP Group for both IBM i 7.2 and IBM i 7.3, and also new HIPER and Security Groups for the big three current release, which are of course IBM i 7.1, IBM i 7.2, and IBM i 7.3. IBM i 7.4 won’t be here until the AS/400’s 31st birthday on June 21.

  • IBM i 7.4 Rolled Out, And IBM i 7.3 Tech Refresh Rolled Up

April 24, 2019 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Every couple of years, we get a new release of the IBM i operating system from Big Blue, and it has been quite a number of years since we have seen a new version of the platform. But that’s alright, since IBM has its Technology Refresh mechanism for adding support for new hardware and for adding significant new software function to the platform without breaking release-level compatibility and therefore requiring customers to requalify their applications, or worse yet, be forced to port their applications to an updated operating system.

This new Technology Refresh approach has been a very good thing, …
