  • IBM Offers Zero Percent Leasing On Power7+, Power8 Iron

October 27, 2014 Timothy Prickett Morgan

If you are looking to get a shiny new Power Systems machine running the current or most recent past generation of Power processors and supporting IBM i, AIX, or Linux workloads, then the Global Financing unit of IBM has a deal for you. It is a simple 24-month, zero percent financing deal that an elementary school student can understand.

As you can see in this announcement, the deal is dirt simple. You take the cost of selected configurations of Power7+ or Power8 systems, divide by 24, and pay IBM that much every month for the iron. IBM acts as a very generous bank, loaning you the money to buy the system at no interest. The deal includes Power Systems Express machines, the systems software loaded on the boxes, and Software Maintenance (SWMA) support over the 24 months of the full payout lease.

For machines running IBM i, the zero percent lease deal covers the following Power7+ machines: The Power 710+ models with the 8231-E1D and 8268-E1D designations, as well as the Power 720+ 8202-E4D, the Power 730+ 8231-E2D, and the Power 740+ 8205-E6D. For the Power8 machines, the leasing deal covers the Power S814, which has the catalog number 8286-41A, and Power S824, which is known as 8286-42A in the IBM naming. The deal is good for machines sold by IBM or resellers, and Power Systems machines with model designations 8408, 9117, 9119, 9109, and 9179. You have to spend at least $5,000 for the IBM i or AIX machines acquired, and I am thinking IBM meant to say $50,000, which is the spending limit for PowerLinux setups. But it says $5,000–as if you could buy a system for that little.
