  • Genuitec Readies New Release of MyEclipse IDE

    March 9, 2010 Alex Woodie

Genuitec this month is expected to deliver a new release of MyEclipse, the $150 IDE that the company positions as an alternative to IBM‘s Rational Application Developer IDE for creating enterprise Java applications. With MyEclipse version 8.5, Genuitec is including its Pulse application lifecycle management and collaboration tools directly into the MyEclipse product.

Genuitec has been developing Java IDEs since it was founded in 1997. In 2003, it launched MyEclipse Blue Edition, its most feature-rich (and expensive) IDE that seeks to offer many of the core WebSphere development capabilities found in IBM’s Eclipse-based RAD offerings.

While MyEclipse Blue doesn’t duplicate the RPG or COBOL development capabilities that can be found in IBM’s new Rational Developer for Power Systems (RDp) product (which will soon replace Rational Developer for System i [RDi], which in turn replaced WebSphere Development Studio Client [WDSc]), a handful of System i programmers are using it to write Java apps that run under i/OS on the WebSphere or Tomcat J2EE Web application servers and write and read to DB2/400.

With the upcoming release of MyEclipse Blue version 8.5, Genuitec will be adding support for WebSphere Portal Server 6.1–a feature that has been requested often, the company says. The new IDE will also get a new WebSphere Application Resource Editor, as well as support for Struts 2, Spring 3.0, and Hibernate 3.3. Rounding out the release are UML 2 upgrades, a JavaScript debugger for IE, a visual SQL builder, and the capability to deactivate unused features through the Pulse dashboard, which speeds the IDE’s performance.

The upcoming version 8.5 release of the MyEclipse Enterprise Workbench will also gain new Pulse capabilities. Pulse is the name of Genuitec’s lifecycle management software for distributing MyEclipse-developed applications to users and managing updates and ongoing maintenance.

In addition to managing application lifecycle tasks, Pulse allows groups of developers to collaborate and customize their development environments, including sharing development tool stacks and assorted add-ons.

“We brought two developer teams together to bring our Pulse management system inside MyEclipse for an enhanced user experience in understanding the status of individual and team collaboration projects,” says Brian Fernandes, MyEclipse product manager for Genuitec.

MyEclipse 8.5 is due this month but has not yet been released. For more information, visit www.genuitec.com.
