  • IBM i PTF Guide, Volume 22, Number 4

    January 27, 2020 Doug Bidwell

Hello once again from the IBM i PTF Guide. We hope that your 2020 is off to a great start, and that you are keeping up to date with your PTFs on your particular release of the IBM i platform. Big Blue is still releasing patches for IBM i 7.1, and even though it will be withdrawing sales and marketing for IBM i 7.2 on April 30 of this year, it will be patching this release of the operating system and database for quite some time to come, as we talked about in The Four Hundred back in June.

In general, a release is supported for seven years, and then is given extended support for a supplemental fee for another three years. We are entering a steady phase, with Big Blue’s plan – very roughly speaking – to have IBM i Next (wat we might call 7.5 or 8.0) ready sometime in late 2021 to early 2022 and IBM i Next +1 (what we might call 7.6 or 8.1) ready in late 2024 or early 2025, following Power10 and Power11 processors into the market but apparently not being launched concurrent with them unless the plan changes. (There is no reason for IBM to tie new software releases to new hardware releases, any more than Red Hat does with Intel chips.)

Anyway, that’s all food for thought. Here is what is going on new this week, presented a little differently:

    PTF Groups 7.4:

    • DB2 for IBM i
    • IBM Db2 Mirror for i
    • Java
    • Backup Recovery Solutions
    • DB2 Web Query for i V2.2.1

    PTF Groups 7.3:

    • MQ for IBM i – v7.1.0/v8.0.0/V9.0.0
    • Java
    • Backup Recovery Solutions
    • DB2 Web Query for i V2.2.1

    PTF Groups 7.2:

    • IBM MQ for IBM i – V7.1.0/V8.0.0/V9.0.0
    • Java
    • Backup Recovery Solutions
    • DB2 Web Query for i V2.2.1

    PTF Groups 7.1:

    • Java
    • Db2 Web Query for i V2.2.1

New (or Updated) Links this week:

    • Java: Supported IBM Java Development Kit (JDK) Versions by IBM i Operating System Version and Release

And now, for your weekly tip: DSPDTAARA QUSRSYS/QSRSAV21, which talks about estimating how long a Go Save Option 21 takes. See this link for more.

The Guide at a glance: There are new defectives this week (01/25/20). Here is the defective PTF rundown, which is the last defective for each release:

    	Defect Defective	APAR	Fixing
    	Date PTF PTF
    	--------	--------	-------	-------
    7.4	12/09/19	SI70924 SE72609	SI71719 (available!)

Note that PTF SI71719 is a distribution requisite of the latest Technology Refresh (TR) PTF. If you have applied the latest TR PTF to your system, you should apply the fixing PTF SI71719 for i 7.4.

    7.3	12/09/19	SI70923 SE72609	SI71718 (available!)

Note that PTF SI71718 is a distribution requisite of the latest Technology Refresh (TR) PTF. If you have applied the latest TR PTF to your system, you should apply the fixing PTF SI71718 for i 7.3.

    7.2	07/29/19	SI69654 SE71792	SI70596 (5733SC1, OpenSSH, available!)
    7.1	07/29/19	SI69653 SE71807	SI70603 (5733SC1, OpenSSH, available!)
