Alex Woodie

Alex Woodie is Senior Editor at IT Jungle. He was previously editor of two of IT Jungle's main newsletters, Four Hundred Stuff and The Windows Observer. Prior to joining Midrange Server (as Guild Companies was formerly called) in October 2001, Alex was a products editor at now defunct publisher Midrange Computing, where he was first introduced to the AS/400 and covered hardware, software, and services for Midrange Technology SHOWCASE magazine. Before joining Midrange Computing, Alex was a staff writer for The Insurance Journal and a reporter and columnist with The Paradise Post newspaper. Woodie obtained his Bachelors of Arts degree in journalism from Humboldt State University in 1997. Upon graduation, Alex intended to make his way onto a major daily newspaper, but in 1999 he found himself drawn to the high-technology industry, where his background in science and engineering has suited him well. He lives in Northern San Diego County. When he is not writing next week's newsletters, Alex can be found in his favorite chair reading the day's paper, in the kitchen, or at the beach.

  • Gamma Soft to Feed DB2/400 Data to NuoDB

    Gamma Soft recently announced it has formed a partnership with NewSQL database startup NuoDB to provide data integration capabilities. The partnership will see Gamma’s data integration software serving DB2/400 data, among others, into NuoDB’s database in a real-time manner.

  • Demystifying AIX Monitoring for IBM i Hacks

    It’s getting tougher for IBM i professionals to pretend that AIX isn’t there. Every year, it seems, more of IBM‘s system software for Power Systems servers runs either in AIX or PASE, the AIX runtime for IBM i.   • iPad App Integrates with Salesforce.com, IBM i

    The Casey Group last month launched Sales Navigator, a new business application that allows users to access their Salesforce.com data from the comfort of an iPad.

    Sales Navigator makes it easier for sales forces to access contacts, calendars, and customer location data that’s stored in their Salesforce.com environment running in the cloud. The iPad application is designed to enable sales personnel to access and organize large contact lists, plan daily sales routes, and improve customer relationships.

  • InsightSoftware.com Revs JD Edwards Reporting Tool

    CFOs and finance managers at JD Edwards shops who need budgeting software may want to take a look at InsightSoftware.com, which yesterday unveiled a new release of InsightUnlimited, its flagship business intelligence software for JD Edwards.

    Headquartered in Ireland, InsightSoftware.com specializes in developing business intelligence software for Oracle‘s E Business Suite and the World and EntepriseOne editions of JD Edwards. The update unveiled yesterday is focused on the budgeting aspect of InsightUnlimited, one of three components of the suite, which also includes reporting and reconciler components.

  • IBM Gooses DS8870 Disk Array With Power7+ Chips

    IBM last month unveiled a refresh of its high-end DS8870 SAN disk array that features the latest Power7+ processors, which Big Blue says will deliver a 15 percent increase in data throughput for transactional workloads. The refreshed SAN also features a pair of new hard drive options, new security features, and new optimizations for Flash drives.

  • Help/Systems Teams with DSI to Sell VTLs

    Help/Systems last week announced it formed a partnership with Dynamic Solutions International that will see DSI selling Help/Systems backup software for IBM i into its installed base.

    DSI is an Englewood, Colorado-based company that sells a range of storage solutions, including disk-based VTLs; LTO tape drives, autoloaders, and libraries; and storage management software. The company has close to 40 years of experience and counts about 2,000 organizations as customers.

  • BCD Brings Mobile App Goodness to WebSmart PHP Edition

    Business Computer Design Int’l. last week unveiled the latest version of its flagship Web application development and runtime environment for IBM i servers. A big part of the WebSmart 10 launch is WebSmart Mobile PHP, a new component that combines server-side PHP code generation with new Mobile jQuery templates to speed the creation of Web-based mobile apps on IBM i.   • LANSA Takes Mobile Apps Offline

    Mobile applications are proving themselves to be useful tools for businesses. But they often don’t work when disconnected from the server running the ERP systems and databases. IBM i development tool maker LANSA is addressing this shortcoming with a new release of its LongRange mobile application framework that allows RPG- or COBOL-based mobile apps to continue working even when the user is outside of cell or WiFi coverage.

    LongRange is a mobile application framework designed to give IBM i shops the capability to deliver mobile interfaces to existing IBM i resources without learning HTML5, CSS3, PHP, JavaScript, Java, or Objective-C.

  • Venyu Hooks Up with CMA for Cloud Backup

    Venyu, a cloud backup and recovery provider, and IBM business partner and midrange server reseller CMA Technology Solutions last week announced the formation of a partnership aimed at providing cloud backup and recovery solutions for IBM i shops.

    Venyu provides cloud-based backup, disaster recovery, and cloud hosting services to more than 1,200 customers, primarily those in the Southeast and Gulf Coast region. The company operates several data centers across the country, including one at its headquarters in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and others in Massachusetts and Missouri.

  • HiT Supports SAP HANA with Data Replication Tool

    The growth of big data systems is driving big demand these days for HiT Software, the BackOffice Associates subsidiary that has made a living making database access products. Last month, HiT bolstered its data replication tool, DBMoto, with the capability to move data into SAP HANA.

    SAP designed its HANA database to house and run operational and analytic workloads at the same time.
