  • For The Prices They Are A-Changin’

October 4, 2021 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Back in the day, when IBM made any price changes to products, we would see these things in the weekly summary reports that its announcement system had compiled and sent out to us on a weekly basis for several decades. Somewhere along the way, either our profile changed without our knowledge or IBM changed something about this email blast system behind the scenes and we stopped seeing all of these Price Change announcements.

Just for the heck of it on Friday, which was a quiet news day in IBM i Land, I logged into the Web front end of the …

  • Rocket Maps IBM i Apps for Modernization Ventures

    September 29, 2021 Alex Woodie

Many IBM i shops want to start modernizing their applications, but they don’t know where to start. One possible beginning is a new software offering called Rocket Process Insights that that documents how IBM i applications work, and provides a heatmap and statistics that show which screens are the most commonly used.

The new offering, which Rocket Software unveiled last week, has been a long time in coming, according to Chris Wey, the president of the company’s Power Systems Business Unit. “It’s a brand-new solution from the company and we’re really excited about it,” he told IT Jungle. “It’s …

  • IBM Patches Nine Security Flaws in IBM i

    September 29, 2021 Alex Woodie

IBM patched issued three security bulletins Friday alerting IBM i users to the availability of patches for nine newly disclosed security vulnerabilities in OpenSSL, HTTP Server, and a WebSphere Liberty components. Some of the vulnerabilities are potentially serious and should be patched immediately.

IBM patched two security flaws its OpenSSL API that potentially could have devastating consequences on impacted systems, including enabling a hacker to take over the server, to read sensitive information, and execute a denial of service (DOS) attack. IBM patched these flaws in IBM i 7.1 through 7.4, according to the security bulletin, which you can read …

  • The IBM i And Its RPG Decade Of Crisis

    September 29, 2021 Roger Pence

Your business desperately needs your IBM i RPG applications to deliver your unique business value to your customers and business partners. RPG programming is a disappearing skill; by 2030 the typical RPG programmer will be 80 years old. Your RPG-dependent business is at risk with the disappearance of RPG programming talent.

The IBM i runs many businesses today and its RPG applications perform unique and mission-critical processes. These businesses can’t get along without them. Alas, the teams that built these applications are rapidly nearing retirement. There aren’t younger RPG programmers in the pipeline. RPG programming is a disappearing skill. Despite …

You know what they say about the best laid plans, and so does COMMON when its plans for POWERUp recently went awry. Despite the best efforts, as reported by IT Jungle’s Alex Woodie last week, COMMON made the decision to remove the in-person option and go totally virtual for the conference that begins next week on October 4. The good news is this isn’t COMMON’s first virtual rodeo so it can rely on past experience to switch smoothly into online mode. You can still register to attend, read on to find more details on POWERUp and the news of the …

  • What IBM i Shops Want From Cloud, And How To Do It Right

September 27, 2021 Timothy Prickett Morgan

It is no secret to readers of The Four Hundred that we are big proponents of so-called cloud computing, which doesn’t just include access to slices of servers but also storage to keep their data and networking to link them to the world and, if multiple slices share work, to link them to storage and to each other.

We never liked the term “cloud,” because it connotes a fuzzy kind of infrastructure when quite the opposite is true. We still don’t like calling it cloud computing, but language is created by consensus, not by fiat, so sometimes we have to …

  • Fresche Takes On New RPG Development And Modernization With X-Elevate

September 27, 2021 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Over the years, Fresche Solutions, the IBM i conglomerate that is focused on development of new applications as well as modernization of existing applications, their interfaces, and their databases, has acquired and built tools that help programmers create Java and PHP programs, or convert RPG applications to Java and PHP. But by its own admission, Fresche did not focus on new RPG application development or the kind of incremental programming that a lot of IBM i shops are doing to gradually modernize their applications, usually through the shift from fixed format RPG to the free form RPG that is similar …

  • Guru: Alternate SQL Row-Selection Criteria Revisited Revisited

    September 27, 2021 Ted Holt

I am not a “do as I say and not as I do” kind of person. After I wrote the article Guru: Alternate SQL Row-Selection Criteria Revisited, I got serious about using dynamic SQL in my RPG programs instead of enabling and disabling logical expressions in the WHERE clause. I’m reliving the days when OPNQRYF was my best friend, trying to make apostrophes play nice with string concatenation.

Overall, I’m happy with the change. When I have converted the switch-laden version to dynamic SQL, I have seen a noticeable performance improvement in some cases, and at least a slight …

  • IBM Adds Public Cloud Targets For IBM i Cloud Backup

    September 27, 2021 Alex Woodie

The cloud has become a popular place for organizations to store backups. And with the recent Technology Refreshes (TRs) for IBM i, the number of targets for the Cloud Storage Solutions for i has increased significantly.

IBM debuted Cloud Storage Solutions for i back in 2016 as a connector that allowed Backup, Recovery, and Media Services (BRMS) to push IBM i backups over the Amazon S3 protocol to the Cleversafe object storage system running in SoftLayer, the public cloud platform that would become IBM Cloud in 2018 (IBM would subsequently rename Cleversafe as IBM Cloud Object Storage).

    IBM has augmented …
