  • One MSP’s Clear View Of The Future Of Cloud ERP

    March 25, 2013 Alex Woodie

Tom Bruno understands cloud ERP better than you. After all, as the president and CEO of Velocity Technology Solutions, a managed service provider (MSP) based in New York City, it is his job to make sure his customers’ JD Edwards, Lawson, Kronos, and Hyperion applications run safely and securely in his private cloud. Bruno recently got on the telephone with IT Jungle to share his view of the future of private clouds and enterprise software’s place in them.

Velocity runs ERP and other critical systems for more than 250 midsize to large companies out of five data centers

  • Midrange Power7+ Servers: Scaling Up Means Bring Your Checkbook

March 25, 2013 Timothy Prickett Morgan

We have spent several weeks walking you through the salient technical and economic characteristics of the new entry Power Systems machines using the new Power7+ processors from IBM. This week, it is time to take a run at those midrange Power 750+ and Power 760+ boxes that are based on the double-stuffed dual-chip modules, or DCMs, that are used to put more cores and threads in these boxes than Big Blue might otherwise not be able to deliver using regular single-chip module, or SCM, units that are used on the entry machines.

  • Using Incremental IFS Backup To Speed Up Backup Time

    March 20, 2013 Hey, Joe

Is there a trick to speeding up AS/400 Integrated File System (IFS) nightly backups? My nightly backups run over 300 minutes and 120 of those minutes are tied to the IFS backup, so it runs into production hours. Here’s the Save (SAV) command I’m using to backup the IFS.

    SAV DEV('/QSYS.LIB/TAP01.DEVD') OBJ(('/*') +
    ('/QSYS.LIB' *OMIT) ('/QDLS' *OMIT)) +
    SAVACT(*SYNC) ENDOPT(*UNLOAD) +
    UPDHST(*YES) DTACPR(*DEV)

    — C

To cut down on IFS backup times, you can modify your backups to perform a full IFS backup once a week and an incremental backup the other nights of the week. Here’s how this works.

  • Using SQL Joins With Tree Structures

    March 20, 2013 Ted Holt

Note: The code accompanying this article is available for download here.

The reason tree structures are important to me is not that they are so numerous, but that I use them every day. I don’t write programs to process tree structures every day, but many of the programs I have written still run every day. For that reason, I must know fast ways to extract data from tree structures. One such method is the SQL join.

This article is a rewrite of the topic “Efficient Database Retrieval” from my article Recursion and the Alternatives, which I wrote eight

  • Tips For Using RDP’s DDS Designer

    March 20, 2013 Susan Gantner

In my Guru tip on the DDS Designer in Rational Developer for Power Systems, I showed you the basics of using the DDS Designer to create or maintain screens. A few changes have been made to the DDS Design tool in recent releases of RDP, and I’ve also had a bit more experience with it. So I decided it was time for an update on the topic.

The most obvious change that has happened in recent releases is that the DDS Design perspective can now automatically be opened on a double-click of a DSPF or PRTF source member. You

  • Linoma Showcases MFT Customer Successes Via Video

    March 19, 2013 Alex Woodie

Linoma Software recently posted a series of customer success stories to its website for GoAnywhere MFT, its managed file transfer (MFT) product for IBM i and other platforms.

Among the IBM i shops participating in Linoma’s video are AAA Cooper Transportation, American Fidelity and Liberty Insurance (AF&L), Londen Insurance, Monterey Mushrooms, P.C. Richard and Son, and United Security, Life, and Health.

A common theme among the stories is a need to automate and streamline cumbersome file transfer activities. For example, it used to take four or five days to compile the month-end reports required at AF&L, according to the video

  • LiveRebel Expands to Support Additional Languages

    March 19, 2013 Alex Woodie

ZeroTurnaround last week unveiled a new release of LiveRebel, a new release of its continuous integration enablement tool for accelerating the application deployment cycle in agile development environments. With version 2.6, LiveRebel now supports additional languages, including PHP, in addition to Java.

LiveRebel helps agile development groups by providing the “last mile” of connectivity between development and production. It automates several tasks that must be completed following the latest development burst, including setting up a test bed, running test scripts, and promoting the software into production.

In previous releases, LiveRebel had been restricted to being used in Java environments. With

  • Spinnaker Takes Third-Party ERP Support Business to Africa

    March 19, 2013 Alex Woodie

Oracle JD Edwards and SAP customers in South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa can now utilize third-party ERP support services from Spinnaker Support thanks to a new partner Spinnaker has in the region.

Denver, Colorado-based Spinnaker’s entry into Africa is largely the result of its new partnership with Mantrasys, a South African company that distributes enterprise IT, network monitoring, and test automation solutions to companies throughout the continent.

Spinnaker managing principal Matt Stava says that the company is being contacted by customers all over the world due to increases in ERP vendor maintenance costs. SAP recently announced it would increase

  • STORServer Unveils Hybrid Backup Appliance

    March 19, 2013 Alex Woodie

STORServer has traditionally required that customers purchase one of its IBM System x-based systems as the basis for their appliance. But with the unveiling of its new Hybrid Appliance (HA) last week, customers can now utilize their own hardware when rolling out their STORServer protection scheme.

STORServer has built a business around making IBM’s Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) backup software easier to use for midsized organizations. While TSM is regarded as a rock-solid, enterprise-strength backup and recovery tool for multi-platform environments, it can be complicated for smaller organizations to install and manage. STORServer addressed these issues by developing its own
