  • iBelieve Tour Returns to Europe

    October 21, 2014 Dan Burger

IBM midrange shops in Europe, be on the lookout–the iBelieve road show, an enthusiastic exercise in IBM i advocacy and “i can do” spirit, is making the rounds. You can count on it making some noise, too. iBelieve events are one-day participatory theater combining education and entertainment.

Retired IBM chief scientist Frank Soltis leads the group of iBelieve speakers that includes IBM i Chief Architect Steve Will, Product Offering Manager Alison Butterill, IBM i advocate extraordinaire Trevor Perry, Maxava‘s Matthew Ashton and Paul Hodgkinson of looksoftware. (For entertainment, you’ll get great stories from Soltis and you might get Perry to sing a song. Hodgkinson is known to tell a joke or two.)

For the education and enthusiasm injection, attendees can expect sessions focusing on IBM i’s business value, its integration with new technologies such as cloud and mobile computing, and discussions on the innovations and skills that are driving the platform and keeping it modern. You can also expect comparisons with other platforms that are mistakenly perceived as technology leaders and better for business computing. Each event incorporates a question and answer session with the speaker panel.

As always, the event is sponsored by looksoftware, the Australian company that specializes in application development/modernization on the IBM i. Looksoftware was acquired last month by Fresche Legacy. The upcoming trip is being co-hosted by COMMON Europe.

iBelieve events are free to both members and non-members of local COMMON groups.

The scheduled stops on the tour include:

    • November 10–Oslo, Norway
    • November 12–Glattfelden, Switzerland
    • November 13–Vienna, Austria
    • November 17–Zakopane, Poland
    • November 19–Eindhoven, BeNeLux
    • November 20–Warwick, United Kingdom

Soltis, who wears the “Father of the AS/400” mantle, has been involved in the previous iBelieve events in Europe and the United States as well as travelling globally as a keynote speaker for multiple events. He says the iBelieve is gaining momentum.

“I’m looking forward to this year’s iBelieve and COMMON Europe tour immensely. The attendees’ enthusiasm last year was quite incredible. They really seem to engage with the speakers, making each event a lively and encouraging experience. I’m a firm believer in the local user group, and what’s so great about the European iBelieve events is the collaboration with the user groups that enables us to meet with, and hear from so many passionate IBM i people. It promises to be a great couple of weeks.”

Event registration is available online along with the agendas for each event. Follow this link for details.

Your IBM Power Cloud Strategy Should Start With “Why?”

Moving IBM i to the cloud isn’t just an infrastructure decision.

A hardware refresh, data center exit, IBM i skills gap, disaster recovery requirement, or broader cloud initiative can each lead to a very different architecture.

At Lightedge, we start by understanding what you’re trying to accomplish. Then we look at the workload, application dependencies, resiliency requirements, operating model, and long-term strategy to determine where that workload belongs.

Managed IBM Power cloud? IBM Power Virtual Server? DR in the cloud? A hybrid architecture connecting IBM Power with AWS or Azure?

There isn’t one right answer for every IBM i environment.

Start with the business requirement. Understand the workload. Then decide where it belongs.

Explore IBM Power cloud, managed services, and hybrid solutions from Lightedge.
