The hot news this week, which we have reported about previously and which we will be drilling down into more deeply, is that the Fall 2022 Tech Refresh updates for IBM i have been announced and will be generally available on December 2. • IBM Unveils Fall 2022 Tech Refreshes for IBM i

    October 12, 2022 Alex Woodie

IBM yesterday announced Technology Refreshes for its two most current IBM i operating systems, including 7.5 and 7.4. Security continues to be a big driver of new functionality with 7.5 TR1 and 7.4 TR7. But the fall TRs bring a bevy of enhancements across all areas, including the database, IBM i services, open source, application development, and analytics, among others.

Security has been the number one concern for CIOs for a few years now, and IBM has responded with a number of new features in IBM i. Some of the new security features exist in IBM i Navigator, the GUI …

  • IBM i Salesforce API Integration Without Writing A Single Line Of Code

    October 12, 2022 Miranda VanHorn

APIs creation is often confusing, time-consuming, and overwhelming. This is due to many IT leaders believing that complex problems require complex solutions. The reality is that API can be surprisingly simple. Sadly, many API solutions promised ease but profited by making it complicated with user-based pricing, high customization fees, significant maintenance agreements, and so forth.

There is a better way, and it’s paved in fully transparent, highly automated, and highly scalable low code. Which you can learn all about here:

Now, you can create and deploy Salesforce APIs – and indeed, other kinds of APIs – in days, not months …

  • Kyndryl Wants to Connect Your IBM i to Microsoft Azure

    October 12, 2022 Alex Woodie

Kyndryl, the former IBM division known as Global Technology Services (GTS), last week unveiled an expanded partnership with Microsoft that will see it helping IBM i and System z customers integrate their applications and data with Microsoft Azure, specifically its low-code, no-code development platform called Power.

Kyndryl’s alliance with Microsoft will make it easier for companies to leverage the valuable data and business logic contained in their midrange and mainframe assets as they develop new applications in the Microsoft Power Platform, which is a low-code, no-code development environment.

“Basically, it provides a low-code, no-code environment in Azure for programmers,” …

  • Various Power Systems Software Tweaks Besides The TR Updates

October 12, 2022 Timothy Prickett Morgan

It is fall IBM i software stack refresh week. As we report about elsewhere in this issue, IBM i 7.5 Technology Refresh 1 and IBM i 7.4 Technology Refresh 7 came out today, and as is Big Blue’s custom in recent years, other parts of the IBM i software stack also got some nips and tucks and tweaks, too.

In announcement letter 222-279, we find the usual agglomeration of updates to the PowerVM server virtualization hypervisor, the PowerVC implementation of the OpenStack cloud controller, the virtual Hardware Management Console, and the Cloud Management Console.

With PowerVM, IBM wanted to …

  • It’s A Good Thing For IBM That Samsung Makes Chips And Also Runs A Foundry

October 10, 2022 Timothy Prickett Morgan

Over the decades, Big Blue has invested an enormous sum of money – easily equal to hundreds of billions of dollars in inflation adjusted 2022 dollars – to figure out clever ways to etch transistors on silicon wafers and to package them up into chips that it and other companies used in commercial and consumer products. It was a great business right up to the minute it wasn’t, mostly because IBM’s chip volumes were getting smaller and smaller at the same time the cost of creating successively smaller transistors was getting larger and larger.

And so, back in 2014, IBM …

  • Thoroughly Modern: Simplify IBM i Application Management and Extract Key Insights

    October 10, 2022 Ray Everhart

IBM i developers and managers understand all too well that application documentation is often out of date – if it even exists. A study from the Singapore Management University says that developers only spend 5 percent of their time writing new code. They spend 20 percent of their time modifying legacy code, and they spend 60 percent of their time trying to understand the code before they modify it.

As businesses adapt to compete in their industries, IT is pressured to innovate and improve agility while maintaining existing systems. It’s also critical that stakeholders can quickly access data from …

  • Integrated Does Not Have To Mean Included And Invoiced

October 10, 2022 Timothy Prickett Morgan

In this era of “pay for what you eat” cloud computing – maybe they should have called it “buffet computing” after all because there sure as hell is nothing cloudy about the bill when it comes – it seems odd that customers can’t pick a la carte the things they want and they don’t want in a system that nonetheless has all of its myriad components and services integrated.

Let’s start by saying we love that the IBM i system is integrated, with one throat to choke (for the most part) when things go wrong. We are strong believers in …

  • Quantum And Atempo Offer Joint Backup Solution

    October 10, 2022 Alex Woodie

An expanded partnership between Atempo and Quantum will see the two vendors go to market with pre-integrated solution that combines Quantum’s storage hardware along with Atempo’s backup software.

The new bundles, which were unveiled in late September, take two forms. The first combines a Quantum media server and a Quantum DXi V5000 virtual backup appliance with Tina, the name of Atempo’s backup software. This solution is targeted at small and midsize businesses (SMBs) that need 80 TB or less of raw backup capacity.

The second bundle, which targets enterprises, combines Tina running on a Quantum media server, along with …
