  • IBM Welcomes COMMON Advisory Councils to Rochester

    December 7, 2022 Alex Woodie

One of the hallmarks of a good company is listening to customers. A company may not do everything that its customers wish, but it must show that it’s listening to maintain the relationship. This dynamic was in play during an IBM i meeting that took place last month in Rochester, Minnesota, between IBM and the advisory councils for both COMMON North America and COMMON Europe.

The three-day meeting that took place November 14 through 16 involved a handful of members from the COMMON Americas Advisory Council (CAAC) as well as the COMMON Europe Advisory Council (CEAC). Both advisory councils had …

  • How HelpSystems Became Fortra

    November 9, 2022 Alex Woodie

HelpSystems, a longtime provider of utilities for IBM i servers and their predecessors, has been on the security warpath of late, using private equity funding to acquire dozens of security software and services firms. The Eden Prairie, Minnesota, company officially completed its pivot to security last week by changing its name to Fortra.

HelpSystems started life back in 1982 when it was founded by Dick Jacobson, who created the first Robot/38 product. Over the years, the company (then called “Help/Systems”) would expand its well-respected suite of general-purpose Robot utilities, such as job scheduling, backup and recovery, and system monitoring, for …

  • HelpSystems Goes on the Security Offensive Again

    October 5, 2022 Alex Woodie

Just when you thought HelpSytsems had bought enough companies, the Eden Prairie, Minnesota, company cranks up the acquisition machine again and gobbles up a few more vendors. Like with previous acquisitions, its recent targets are in security.

The most recent buy was completed a month ago, when HelpSystems bought Outflank Security Tooling, which it describes as “an IT security leader with deep expertise in adversary simulation, specialist cyber security trainings, and a unique cloud-based software offering for red teams.”

Penetration testing has become popular as security vulnerabilities in corporate systems have become more apparent. Adversary simulation, or “red teaming,” …
