  • IBM i PTF Guide, Volume 27, Number 16

    April 23, 2025 Doug Bidwell

This week, we bring you two security vulnerabilities and an import HIPER for firmware updates for Power Systems iron. Let’s start with the firmware.

There is new microcode for Firmware 950 .. 950.D1, which you can find out more about at this link here, and new microcode for Firmware 950 .. 950.E0, which you can read all about at that link there. These are HIPERs and affect the following hardware:

    • Power System S914 Server (9009-41A)
    • Power System S922 Server (9009-22A)
    • Power System S924 Server (9009-42A)

Now for the vulnerabilities. First, we have Security Bulletin: IBM i 7.6 is …

Brace yourself, there is lots of stuff going on in PTF Land this week. To begin with, there are three security vulnerabilities.

First, we have Security Bulletin: IBM HTTP Server (powered by Apache) for IBM i is vulnerable to a remote attacker causing a denial of service, executing arbitrary code, and mapping URLs to filesystem locations due to multiple vulnerabilities. You can find out more about this vulnerability at this link. The patches are as follows, by release:

    7.5	SJ01738
    	SJ02179
    7.4	SJ01739
    	SJ02177
    7.3	SJ01752
    	SJ02176
    7.2	SJ01751

  • Fresche Bolsters MFA with IBM i Exit Point Coverage

    December 6, 2023 Alex Woodie

Organizations relying on Fresche Solutions’ multi-factor authentication (MFA) to protect their IBM i assets can now implement more fine-grained enforcement by protecting access to IBM i exit points, the company announced recently. The MFA offering also now hooks into enterprise-level MFA solutions.

MFA has emerged as a minimum standard for protecting critical IT assets and data, as well as for preventing ransomware attacks. Even if a cybercriminal were to obtain the user ID and password to access sensitive applications and data, MFA serves as a difficult-to-overcome barrier that slows, if not prevents, them from actually getting into systems.

    Fresche Solutions …

The IBM i 7.4 Technology Refresh 8 marker PTF is out, and we see it in HTTP Server Group 26. Nothing special so far, just the indication that it is out, but nothing on 7.3 or 7.5 groups, yet – only 7.4. Thank you, Jozef in New Zealand, for catching that, and sharing it! The Four Hundred collective thinks the IBM i TRs might be coming on April 11, but that has not been confirmed by Big Blue as yet.

We mostly suspect this will happen because that is when ITJ Editor Alex Woodie scheduled a trip to Hawaii with …

  • IBM Publishes Power10 Performance Optimize Guide

    December 7, 2022 Alex Woodie

IBM i shops looking to squeeze the most performance out of their Power10 servers have a lot of options available at their disposal. IBM covers many, if not all, of them in its latest performance paper, titled “IBM Power10 performance optimization for IBM i,” which it released last week.

The Power10 is the most powerful processor IBM ever built. Compared to the Power9 processor, the Power10 delivers 20 percent to 30 percent higher performance per core. And with 25 percent more cores per socket, that means oodles of more processing power to do useful work.

At a system level, the …

Well, there is a lot of stuff going on with IBM i PTFs this week, with cumulative patch rollups, or Cumes as we call them, Technology Refreshes, and other goodies. Specifically, IBM i 7.3 and IBM i 7.2 have Cume rollups, as well as their respective TR6 and TR12 updates of new functionality.

There are also two new security vulnerabilities. First, there is Security Bulletin: IBM Navigator for i is vulnerable to an SQL injection (CVE-2022-22495), which you can read about at this link. The patches for this vulnerability are as follows:

So here is what’s new. Here is a notice at the top of the Fix Central Home Page: “Your action may be required. IBM will implement infrastructure improvements to electronic fix distribution on June 4, 2022. IP and hostnames will change for servers that support fix delivery. New connections are required. You must configure your firewall and proxy server if you have a firewall in your network, or if your machine uses a proxy server to access the internet. Please see preparing firewalls and proxies.”

And here is another note from the PTF Cume Cover Letter: “IMPORTANT: Permanently apply any …
