  • IBM i PTF Guide, Volume 22, Number 21

    May 27, 2020 Doug Bidwell

As we report elsewhere in this issue, there really is not going to be a Technology Refresh as we know it and as we were all lead to believe was coming for IBM i 7.3 and IBM i 7.4, but rather just a refresh of all the pertinent groups through the PTF process.

Also, IBM’s Entitled Systems Support (ESS) has finally finished shedding its old coat, and the new one contains current resaves and a new way of asking for things! So be aware of that and take a gander. Moreover, Domino links have changed, thanks to Michael Mayer in …

It has been a weird week in PTF Land. The respin of the operating systems is temporarily unavailable from IBM’s Entitled Systems Support and as far as we can tell the Technology Refreshes – that’s IBM i 7.3 TR8 and IBM i 7.4 TR2 – are not yet available. We are trying to get to the bottom of the issue. There’s something weird going on.

In the meantime, there are recommended High Availability fixes for IBM i 7.2., IBM i 7.3, and IBM i 7.4. There is also a Security Bulletin: Vulnerability CVE-2020-4345 in SQL that affects IBM i, 7.4, …

The big news this week in IBM i PTFs is that there is a new security bulletin that is out relating to Python that affects IBM i 7.2, IBM i 7.3, and IBM i 7.4. You can read about Security Bulletin: Vulnerability CVE-2020-8492 in Python at this link.

There are no new or updated links in the IBM i PTF Guide sheet this week, so steady as she goes on that front.

And now your weekly tip: Talk to people, take the extra time, we all need to talk to each other at this time.

    The Guide at a …

Hello good people of IBM i Land. This week, there are updates for Rational Developer for i Version 9.6.0.8, for all releases of IBM i. This has been an on again/off again dance with IBM, and we are not sure why Big Blue posted it a few weeks ago, then unposted it, and then reposted it. However, the updates for RDi are for real – and available this week!

Aside from that, it has been a pretty quiet week for PTFs in Lake Bugsbegone up in lovely Minnesota, the Land of Lakes, with no new groups for the two current …

Welcome to the next issue of the IBM i PTF Guide. There are updates for Rational Developer for i Version 9.6.0.8, and for all IBM i 7.X releases. We added an OS Resave column to Technology Refresh tab, since it turns out there was a resave on IBM i 7.3 last year that impacted PTFs. We need to keep track of that.

And, once again, just a reminder: The Technology Refreshes for IBM i 7.3 and IBM i 7.4 are not going to be available until the middle of May, so the IBM i PTF Guide will not reflect …

Hello good people of IBM i Land. Just a reminder: The Technology Refreshes for IBM i 7.3 and IBM i 7.4 are not going to be available until the middle of May, so the IBM i PTF Guide will not reflect the changes that are coming until then – even though they have been announced. However, the TR link in the Guide will provide insight into the info on the web about the upcoming TRs. So check it out.

Also: Resaves are announced but not available yet. See TR link in Guide. And IBM i Access Client Solutions V1.1.8.4, …

Big Blue has been busy fixing some issues with the firmware (sometimes called microcode) and licensed internal code (LIC) for Power Systems platforms and the IBM i operating system.

The new firmware is available on the following Power Systems machine types and models: 9008-22L; 9009-22A; 9009-41A; 9009-42A; 9223-22H; 9223-42H. You can find out more about the microcode update at this link.

We hope you are well out there in IBM iLand during the Great Infection. These are tough times, but we can get through it together. The PTF updates are a little skimpy this week, and that is just as well with people having plenty of other things on their mind.

And here is the rundown by IBM i release:

    PTF Groups 7.3

We hope everybody is keeping safe during the coronavirus outbreak. The PTFs are a-rolling again, and that means the IBM i PTF Guide is updated to keep you up to speed.

The first new thing is that there is a Direct URL for Access to Digital Certificate Manager. For example: http://9.5.123.234:2001/QIBM/ICSS/Cert/Admin/qycucm1.ndm/main0.

There are updates to the primary IBM i releases that still get patched, as follows:

    • Backup Recovery Solutions
    • WebSphere App Server V8.5
    • Content Manager OnDemand for i

It is a quiet in IBM i PTF Land this week, and that is to be expected with the coronavirus outbreak finally – and very regretfully but not unexpectedly – making its way around the global. But we will continue to put out the IBM i PTF Guide like clockwork because keeping mission critical systems up to date and humming along is more important than ever, even if the volume of business for most companies is, at this point with few exceptions, hard to guess.

We are here to help, and if you run into trouble on your systems because …
