  • Four Hundred Monitor, June 1

    June 1, 2020 Jenny Thomas

A lot has happened in the last week. There has been some exciting news like seeing astronauts heading back into space, and there has been some upsetting like the unrest in cities around the U.S. So we hope you’ll find Four Hundred Monitor to be a respite from the world. While we can’t completely avoid the coronavirus, we can stick to how it is affecting our industry and keep our focus on computing and the midrange space. It has always been our goal to gather interesting news, helpful resources, and industry happenings into this useable resource as a service to …

With the passing of the Memorial Day holiday in America last weekend, observed to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military, the summer season is officially underway. Of course, it looks a lot different this year, with many businesses still shuttered and workers making plans for re-openings instead of vacations. The news continues to reflect the havoc caused by the coronavirus, as we see IBM slashing jobs as companies continue to look for ways to stay connected to employees and customers. With any luck, the warmer weather will bring better news, computing- and coronavirus-wise, …

Depending on where you reside, you may be seeing some changes in the stay-at-home order most of us have been living under since March. In some parts of the U.S., restaurants and gyms have re-opened, while in other places, like here in southern California, we only just allowed back to our beaches (surfers and walkers only, no sitting on the sand) and all while under cover of masks. What does seem to be more common is the desire to get back underway again, with many businesses doing whatever is necessary to adapt and open their doors in some fashion. Hopefully …

I thought it might be nice this week to scour the headlines for some non-COVID-19 related stories as a bit of a respite from the ongoing pandemic. That didn’t work out so well, despite the fact that many states are beginning to slowly allow businesses to open back up and restrictions are starting to ease. This week is a little different, though, as much of the news is about how businesses are adapting, and we are seeing many changes in the Calendar as organizations bring their events online, postpone, or even cancel. The day has not yet come where the …

Depending on where you live, your life might be getting back to some semblance of normal . . . or the “new normal” as we all now commonly refer to life in a coronavirus world. Hopefully you have found new routines and as the weather improves as we head toward summer, we can all look forward to spending more time outside in the socially appropriate distance of others. Until then, rely on IT Jungle to keep you informed about the IBM i ecosystem and beyond. You can also find our COVID-19 Response section below for a recap on how our …

The lockdown continues and while it may seem like everything has come to a screeching halt, the world is still spinning and businesses are carrying on as best as they can. Take IBM, for instance. The plan for introducing us to its new CEO has been in the works for some time, and pandemic or not, it came time for Arvind Krishna to take the reins. And on April 6, he did exactly that, and started the day with a letter, which you can see at the first link in the Top Stories From Outside The Jungle section below. Before …

  • Love – And Business – In The Time Of Coronavirus

March 23, 2020 Timothy Prickett Morgan

We are shaped by bad times as much as good ones. Maybe more.

Some of my earliest memories as an aware young person are of the effects of recession on my parents when they were young people working in the factories of New Jersey. And when I say young, I mean we were all young at the time. Both of my parents lost their jobs in the recession of 1960 through 1970, and they lost them again during the much worse recession from 1973 through 1975. It was scary for me and my siblings, but obviously even scarier …

Social distancing isn’t a new concept for the staff of IT Jungle. We all work remote so we don’t get to spend time together in an office. (Don’t get me wrong. We like each other and wish we could see each other more often.) What is new for all of us is how to continue to operate as we shelter in place and wait to see what happens next. It might seem like our industry would be ideal for social distancing, but losing the opportunity to collaborate in the office or at a tradeshow or other event is sure to …
