  • Four Hundred Monitor, February 26

    February 26, 2020 Jenny Thomas

February may be the shortest month but sometimes it feels like is might be the longest. That could be because news on the computing front has been a bit slow in the last few weeks as we are getting ready for the announcements that come along with the Spring conference season. As February wraps up, we have a smattering of news to share from around our community, and we hope you’ll be sure to check out the growing list of Chats, Webinars, Seminars, Shows, and Other Happenings in the last section below, where the news is sure to be happening. …

We take great pride in being a respected and reliable purveyor of information in the IBM i ecosystem. But in order to distribute information, we have to find it. In the IBM i world, that data can be hard to come by. Fortunately for us, we have our editor in chief Timothy Prickett Morgan who is able to slice and dice whatever data nuggets he gets and coax out their relevance to our favorite platform. Another valuable resource for data are the surveys more and more players in the IBM i space are conducting. Your responses tell them about your …

I hope you’re not sick of cloud news yet, because we’re only a few weeks into the New Year and the cloud continues to dominate the headlines. Of course, it’s no surprise there are cloudy skies ahead for the IBM i ecosystems in 2020, but there is lots more to look forward to in the coming months. Our own Co-Editor of The Four Hundred Alex Woodie reached out to ask leaders around our community for their best predictions of what’s to come, and you can see what he found out in our top story below. Then don’t miss the results …

Welcome back! For many of us, this is the first real work week of the new year, full of possibilities and ambitions as we steam ahead into 2020. But just because 2019 is now in the rearview doesn’t mean we can’t take a look back at what a year it was. IT Jungle’s own Alex Woodie recently revisited the biggest IBM i stories of last year, and it’s a fun read and reminder of all that happened during our previous trip around the sun. For a peek into the future, don’t miss IT Jungle editor in chief Timothy Prickett Morgan …

The news of the week seems to be heavily focused on two different topics: quantum computing and ransomware. IBM is looking to establish itself as a quantum computing superpower, and is ready to go to the mat with Google over its claims that Google researchers are leading the pack. And then there are the omnipresent reports of ransomware attacks, which we continue to point out in hopes it reminds our readers to make data protection a high priority. You can find links to some of the highlights (or lowlights in the case of cyberattacks) for both topics below.

Each week, it seems like we point to far too many articles about data breaches and other types of cybercrime. So this week it is nice to be able to direct your attention to some positive news on the cybercrime front. IBM has launched a program to help cities learn how to protect citizens and businesses from those criminals lurking in the interweb. In the first article below, you can read more about a new project IBM has started with the City of Los Angeles better prepare and defend against cyberattacks. It’s a step in the right direction for getting …

“You see golf. We see data.” I probably won’t be watching, but golf fans know the Masters kicks off this week in Georgia, and tech fans will be interested in seeing how IBM’s Watson keeps the tournament running smoothly. Of course, I wish I could tell you the IBM i was prominently featured, but it is always good to see IBM getting in front of 13 million television viewers, if the 2019 Masters lives up to last year’s numbers. You can see IBM’s slick website for the Masters at the first link below, and continue on from there for the …

I think we’re all pretty tired of being lectured about security. I mean, there can’t be anyone left who doesn’t understand the importance of protecting data from all of the virtual predators who are out to steal and exploit it. And yet, week after week, the news headlines continue to be dominated by security breaches, sometimes perpetrated by hackers and sometimes by stupidity. This week we take a look at just a few of the recent security headlines in our top stories, but we leave it to you to make sure you’re doing everything you can to protect your data …

Did you know today, March 20, is considered the first day of spring? At least in the Northern Hemisphere it is. Also known as the spring equinox, today the length of the day is nearly equal in all parts of the world. While those of us on the Northern side of the globe start to enjoy longer, sunnier days, we can all enjoy the latest news from in and around our IBM i ecosystem. Be sure to check out our calendar at the bottom section for travel opportunities – a trip to COMMON in Southern California sounds like a great …
