Tennis fans look forward to the U.S. Open. Technology fans do, too, but for different reasons. “Fans accessing the U.S. Open digital experiences this year will be able to experience every singles match, across all 17 courts, with detailed audio narration and captions accompanying each video – thanks to the power of IBM’s watsonx generative AI, specifically trained on the language of tennis,” said Jonathan Adashek, senior vice president of communications and marketing at IBM. Not sure how John McEnroe and his fellow commentators feel about being replaced by watsonx, but read our Top Story to see what all fans …

As Editor Alex Woodie reports in another story in this issue, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Alex is reporting on data breaches when he points out that, despite changing technology, many aspects of data theft have remained unchanged. We also see that pattern in our Top Stories this week, where once again the hot talk around the industry is about AI, protecting data, and ChatGPT. We might tire of these topics, but there is no hiding from them. Maybe, by staying aware, you will be the one to save your company from a devastating data …

The heat wave has finally hit the western parts of the U.S. after a relatively mild June, and the temps have been extreme. The temperature is not the only thing that is rising, though. Talk about going all in. IBM dropped $4.6 billion in cash this week to pick up technology spend-management platform Apptio. Compared to the $34 billion Red Hat deal of 2019, this might seem like small potatoes, but that was then and these days even IBM has had layoff and hiring freezes, so Big Blue must be feeling very confident this pick up will bolster its capabilities in cloud and automation. “Technology is changing business at a rate and pace we’ve never seen before,” IBM CEO Arvind Krishna said in the release. “To capitalize on these changes, it is essential to …

Today is the official first day of summer. Depending where you live, it may not feel like it, or you may think summer is already in full swing. But summer isn’t measured by temperatures and sunshine, it is considered to be the first day of summer in astronomical terms, as today is the summer solstice. In terms of daylight, this day is 4 hours, 19 minutes longer than the December solstice. In most locations north of the equator, the longest day of the year is around this date. But before you head out to enjoy those extra daylight hours, catch …

One of the many nice things about the IBM i ecosystem is how we all try to look out for each other. Take reader Michael D. Mayer. Michael is a IBM i Power System Admin who developed and manages an “IBM i Reference Page” blog. He recently shared it with us in hopes that we could spread the word about this free resource, which is his contribution to the IBM i community. The blog is updated often and “It’s something I wished I had when I was working my way through the early days of the AS400, iSeries, i5, etc.,” …

Artificial intelligence is getting a bad rap these days, and IBM’s CEO Arvind Krishna isn’t happy about it. In fact, he says the recent reporting that quoted him as saying that IBM could replace 7,800 workers with AI software was incorrect, and his comments were taken out of context. Of course, that doesn’t explain why IBM recently paused hiring for “replaceable” roles. You can read more about what Krishna is saying about AI now in our Top Story below. Our Calendar is continuing to grow so be sure to check in about the latest learning opportunities.
