  • Four Hundred Monitor, July 14

    July 14, 2021 Jenny Thomas

The biggest computing news that happened while IT Jungle was on holiday last week was the REvil ransomware attack, which infected thousands of victims in at least 17 countries. The attack was largely through firms that remotely manage IT infrastructure for multiple customers, a scary thought for our IBM i ecosystem. We often site stories here in Monitor about ransomware and other types of cybercrime, and we hope your organization is taking steps to protect its precious data and systems. Our top story this week looks at why ransomware is becoming so prevalent, and don’t miss our own Alex Woodie’s …

Before the IT Jungle gang heads out for a much-needed break over the Fourth of July week, we take a quick look at what’s been happening around the IBM i ecosystem and the bigger computing world. And while clouds are clearing as we head into the heat of summer, the cloud continues to dominate headlines across the board. As we look ahead to the Fall, we are seeing more training opportunities coming up – live and virtual – so be sure to check the Calendar listings below. In particular, don’t miss out on the final RPG & DB2 Summit, which …

Remember the days of summer camp? As a kid, summer camp memories might include swimming and hiking, roasting marshmallows, and even feeling a little homesick. Common Europe has reimagined summer camp with the IBM i professional in mind, and you don’t even have to go anywhere to join in on the fun. Common Europe’s Power Summer Camp 2021 Virtual Edition begins running live on the Internet on June 14, and it is free to attend. In yet another sign of a return toward normal, whatever that will be post-pandemic, COMMON held its NAViGATE conference and exhibition this week, welcoming attendees virtually — as well as live and in person — to learning sessions and an expo. Continue to follow IT Jungle for news coming out of NAViGATE as we all look forward to seeing what our IBM i ecosystem has in store as businesses begin to reopen and start the work of moving beyond the challenges of adapting to COVID-19. The current news of the week is a hodgepodge of topics, which is a nice …

Here in southern California, where a couple of the IT Jungle crew reside, we are in the throes of May Gray, soon to be followed by the equally depressing June Gloom. It’s our own weird little season between Spring and Summer marked by overcast mornings followed by a peek of sunshine if you’re far enough from the coast. The current news cycle is reminiscent of the May Gray/June Gloom with a mix of ho-hum but a glimmer of what we have to look forward to. Read on for the latest industry and related news, and don’t forget to check out …

One of our favorite readers emailed recently to share the results of his Google alerts. He is on the lookout for mentions of the “IBM i” and we wanted to let us know it would be a pretty short list some days if it weren’t for IT Jungle. A compliment for sure because we are quite proud of the work we do here to keep you informed about our little ecosystem, but also a little sad since we would also like to see more voices talking about this robust and vibrant platform. For Monitor, we also have trouble finding other …

The winds of change are blowing. Well, it might be more correct to call is a slight breeze, but the fact is that we are starting to see a slow rebound from the pandemic. This week, our own Alex Woodie reported on tech conferences happening around the IBM i. Virtual elements still remain, but the return to in-person conferencing is underway and coming to a city near you. Get more details in the Top Story below and then stay in the loop on what’s happening in your area (or on your computer) by checking out the Chats, Webinars, Seminars, Shows, …

Survive. Adapt. Thrive. Yes, that’s our tagline here in the IT Jungle. But it could also be the three best words to describe this last year since the beginning of the Great Pandemic. As parts of the U.S. and the world begin to re-open, much of the IT industry-related news is focusing on lessons learned and the changes organizations are their employees are making to keep everyone healthy and safe. The post-pandemic world is likely changed forever, with remote and in-person options becoming part of the norm. COMMON, for instance, is diving into this hybrid approach next month with its …

April has been called the “month of reawakening,” I would guess because Spring is finally here and the world is coming alive with warmer temperatures and blossoming flowers. April 2021, however, could be the greatest awakening of them all, as vaccines roll out across the world and more and more people attempt to back to a normal (whatever that is now) life. Whether you are easing back in or diving in headfirst, there is lots to look forward to in the months ahead. As we move ahead, be sure to check Monitor for all the latest news and opportunities coming …

IBM is all about the hybrid cloud these days, and it is frustrating that there is never much said about our favorite platform. Of course we all know it’s humming away taking care of business somewhere in the background, but wouldn’t it be nice if once in awhile IBM did a little dreaming about what might be in the future of the IBM i? That’s one of the many reasons we appreciate our IT Jungle editor in chief, Tim Prickett Morgan, who enjoys the occasional daydream about what he’d like to see, which is why we’re sharing his latest wish …
